ANALYSIS: At this time of the season, savvy managers are watching their league standings closely and judging which categories might be the easiest to leapfrog opponents. Managers looking to close the gap in home runs and RBI should give Matt Wallner a chance. He has certainly earned the trust of his real-life manager.
That’s some curious phrasing on Baldelli’s part but his praise is accurate. The 6’5” outfielder has been a highly anticipated prospect in the Twins’ system since being drafted in 2019 in large part because of his 70-grade power. Wallner had a couple of brief stays with his parent club early in the season but only saw 25 total plate appearances. On July 15 he got the call again after Jose Miranda was placed on the injured list and is making a case to stay with Minnesota.
Since July 17, the 25-year-old has appeared in 21 straight games, starting in 19 of them. After a slow start, he has made the most of this opportunity, posting a .996 OPS over the last two weeks. He has also driven in 12 RBI and crushed 6 home runs including a walk-off shot on August 6.
The Twins are trying to hold their division lead and will roll with their hottest bats. Eventually, Wallner’s 30% strikeout rate will catch up to him, but that can be Rocco Baldelli’s problem. Pick up Wallner for your fantasy team while he is mashing. If he slips you can seek out the next streak to ride to your championship.
