ANALYSIS: Matt Shoemaker came seemingly out of nowhere in 2014 to deliver an excellent fantasy season. He won 16 games with a 3.04 ERA, 8.2 K/9, and 5.17 K/B. Last season, he showed flashes of that form, but was too often victimized by the long ball. 2016 looked like more of the same early on, but The Cobbler has been much better recently thanks to increased reliance on his splitter. Over his last four starts, Shoemaker has struck out 37 batters and walked none in 30 innings, allowing just eight runs in the process. Half of those came in his last turn on Monday against the Yankees. He was cruising until the seventh inning, when he allowed a pair of solo homers, and Jose Alvarez allowed both of his inherited runners to score. Those homers were also the first he'd allowed in nearly a month.
Wins may be tough to come by on a lousy Angels squad, but as long as Shoemaker is getting these kinds of results out of leaning on his best pitch, he's a worthy addition to most fantasy rosters.
