After being a free agent for most of the offseason, third baseman Matt Chapman finally found a new home. Chapman agreed to a three-year, $54 million deal with the San Francisco Giants. The new Giants third baseman can opt out of his contract following either of the first two seasons.
Chapman will bring a much-needed bat in the middle of the Giants lineup. Most importantly, though, his gold glove will be the biggest boost on defense.
So, what does the Chapman signing do for his fantasy value? How will he fit in the Giants lineup?

Matt Chapman Fantasy Baseball Outlook
Chapman is not necessarily known for his offense, but he can contribute solid extra-base hit numbers. Last season, the third baseman hit .240 with 17 home runs, 54 RBI, and 39 doubles across 140 games.
The 30-year-old has never really been a consistent bat, which makes him a risk in all fantasy formats. He has just a career .240 average, and he's coming off a season where his 17 HRs and 54 RBI were the second-fewest in a full season. In a very good Blue Jays offense, Chapman struggled to put up big numbers in 2023.
Now, the veteran will go to a Giants offense that doesn't nearly have the same talent as the Blue Jays. Last season, San Francisco's offense averaged just 4.16 runs per game, seventh-fewest in the majors. There isn't a lot of upside in selecting him in drafts, but he has hit over 25 HRs in three of the past four full seasons.

Where Does Matt Chapman Fit In The Giants Lineup?
Last season in Toronto, Chapman moved around the batting order from fourth to eighth. However, his most frequent spot in the order was fifth, which could be the same with the Giants.
It remains to be seen where Chapman does wind up fitting in San Francisco's lineup, but we likely see him hitting fourth or fifth. Newcomers Jung Hoo Lee and Jorge Soler should both be hitting in front of him.

In spring training so far, Lee has led off with Thairo Estrada hitting second, Michael Conforto hitting third, and Soler hitting in the cleanup spot. So, it's likely that Chapman could find himself hitting fifth behind Soler in 2024.
