ANALYSIS: Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Matt Boyd is only 6-10 this season, posting a 4.33 ERA that is a bit below average, but there are a lot of reasons to own Boyd. First off, he has 8.14 strikeouts per nine this season and has 35 strikeouts in his last 34 1/3 innings. Secondly, he has also walked just five batters in that same time span (since the beginning of July) and has allowed less than five hits in four of his six starts in that time period. Unfortunately, he is only 2-4 in those starts, posting a 4.72 ERA.
As you look more into Boyd's statistics, he also has a 3.53 FIP since the beginning of July (60% strand rate) and had allowed two runs or fewer in three consecutive starts before allowing four runs in 5 1/3 innings against the Angels on August 6. Boyd has allowed four earned runs in his other three starts in that same time period, and does only have 11 strikeouts in his last 13 1/3 innings, but he has shown that he can be an effective pitcher.
After facing the Twins on Sunday in Detroit, Boyd will make his only start of Week 20 against the Twins in Minnesota. Considering his good run of play and a good matchup, those in deeper formats should be looking at Boyd.
