Fantasy Baseball Impact Of Martin Perez Reportedly Moving To A Long Relief Role
Texas Rangers starting pitcher Martin Perez is reportedly moving to the bullpen as a long reliever per a tweet from The Dallas Morning News’ Shawn McFarland on Thursday. McFarland tweeted the following:
So far this season, Perez has made 20 starts for the Rangers, logging a 4.98 ERA and a 5.32 FIP in 108.1 innings in the process. He’s struck out just 5.73 batters per nine innings, his lowest number in that category since 2018, and is walking 3.41 batters per nine frames. What’s more, the veteran has collected eight pitcher wins in his 20 starts, however, a switch to long relief could seriously hinder his chances of collecting more wins moving forward.
Truth be told, Perez's switch to a long relief role in the bullpen all but decimates his fantasy ceiling for the rest of the season – or for as long as he’s working in that role as a reliever. Not only does not get regular chances to log pitcher wins, but the veteran likely won’t be getting save chances in the bullpen either.
Fantasy managers can drop the 32-year-old to waivers in all but the deepest leagues, especially as he hasn’t logged high strikeout or low run-prevention metrics this season.
