The Miami Marlins have hired Don Mattingly as the team’s next manager.
As soon as Mattingly and the Los Angeles Dodgers parted ways, the Marlins immediately wanted to interview him. It’s a four-year deal with the expectation of the terms of the deal to be revealed during a press conference after the conclusion of the World Series.
Mattingly led the Dodgers to three straight NL West titles. The 54-year-old went 446-363 during his five-year run in Los Angeles but was unable to get the team to the World Series. The Dodgers lost to the New York Mets in the NLDS 3-2.
The Dodgers provided Mattingly with the highest payroll in MLB and he was able to make it work. During his tenure, the manager and Los Angeles management didn’t exactly get along. He will now move onto a much younger team.
The Marlins were expected to be in postseason contention in 2015 but finished 20 games below .500. Giancarlo Stanton and Jose Fernandez are expected to be healthy for the 2016 season, which would help Mattingly’s first season.
