ANALYSIS: The G-League Bubble was an excellent platform, particularly in a season with so many health concerns, for the NBA's youngest of talents to make their case for big league playing time, and with the recent absences of Kyle Lowry and Fred VanVleet, Malachi Flynn manifested for himself a noisy arrival. Naturally, with Toronto's backcourt depth, Flynn didn't see voluminous minutes until April hit. In four games since that point, Flynn has averaged 33.2 minutes per game, producing 13.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, 5.3 assists, and 2.5 steals while also lighting it up from long-range to the tune of 42.1% shooting.
The 2020 first-rounder struggled from the field early in the season, but has gotten steadily better as his usage and time on the floor expanded. Fortunately, that was one of few areas in Flynn's game that lagged in efficiency. Otherwise, he sports impressive figures in assist rate (19.2%) and steal rate (2.2%), and his 11.9% turnover rate displays poise and control beyond rookie years. Lowry and VanVleet won't be gone long, so we probably can't expect 30+ minutes every night, but with his three-point efficiency catching up to his distribution and perimeter defense, he won't need 30 minutes to fill the box score.
