ANALYSIS: At 6-6 and 250 pounds, Logan Thomas definitely has a build that will prove useful in practically anything he could be assigned to do on the football field. The 29-year-old product of Virginia Tech was a three-year starter at quarterback, and while he was able to accumulate 9,003 passing yards, 1,370 scrimmage yards (mostly from rushing), and 25 combined receiving and rushing touchdowns in that time, he also struggled to control his pass-trajectory as evidenced by his total ratio of 52 passing touchdowns to 39 interceptions.
That was in 2013. After a three-year hiatus following his rookie year and some bouncing around, Thomas landed with a Washington squad facing severe depletion at tight end, and he already appears well on his way to a career campaign. In Washington's Week One matchup against Philadelphia, Thomas caught four passes out of eight targets for a total of 37 yards and a touchdown. Even more surprising: he led the team in targets, was second in receptions, third in receiving yards, and was the only player to notch a receiving TD. Thomas's success and volume of opportunity to kick off the season caught many by surprise, and the usual questions have naturally risen as to whether the showing was a tad bit flukey. However, there just aren't many obstacles in the way of Thomas remaining a consistent fixture in the Washington offense for weeks to come.
His main competition for looks in the passing game comes from J.D. McKissic, Dontrelle Inman, and Terry McLaurin, with Steven Sims establishing himself as a potential deep-threat on Sunday against the Eagles. McKissic and Inman will probably continue to receive their typical share of targets, but the damage that each player is capable of likely comes with a hard ceiling, and they may have already lost an iota of Dwayne Haskins' trust after catching just three passes out of ten targets combined. McLaurin is the top receiving asset of the offense, having established that fact from the start, but he is far from the level of WR that won't leave any food on the table for others to get their fill. With Haskins under center, there is a definite cap on the receiving yards and touchdowns to go around, but with such a formidable frame and a standout, rock-solid season debut, Logan Thomas could be someone that you'd like to make a move for sooner rather than later.
