Being an NFL offensive coordinator is a rare opportunity because only 32 are employed at any given season. With that massive responsibility comes a direct impact on the team’s success. Likewise, their sound tactics can help quarterbacks, skill position players, and offensive linemen become Pro Bowlers or All-Pros.
The journey to becoming an offensive coordinator varies. Some get promoted after handling a minor coaching role while others are former NFL head coaches looking to help another team. Regardless of their paths, the best-performing offensive coordinators could land NFL or college football head coaching jobs.
Therefore, here are the coordinators tasked to diagram plays that could lead to points. Several will take on the offensive coordinator position for new teams this season.

Miami Dolphins – Frank Smith
🎥 Frank Smith on Jaylen Waddle: "Jaylen really, everyday he is here. He's just trying to get better and he's so competitive. Been really pleased with him so far and really excited for the rest of camp to see the growth." (@MiamiDolphins) #GoFins pic.twitter.com/jnqoRk36vj
— FinsXtra (@FinsXtra) August 1, 2024
Smith will enter his third season as Dolphins offensive coordinator, the same tenure as head coach Mike McDaniel. He will be in charge of an explosive offense featuring Tua Tagovailoa, Tyreek Hill, and Jaylen Waddle. Before joining the Dolphins, Smith has been coaching for various NFL positions since 2010.
New England Patriots – Alex Van Pelt
#Patriots OC Alex Van Pelt on Javon Baker:
“He’s been impressive. He’s made plays on the ball, his route-running is really good. As he continues to master the system, he’ll continue to make strides, but he’s been impressive.” pic.twitter.com/gFfkOW8OBU
— The Coachspeak Index (@CoachspeakIndex) June 5, 2024
Van Pelt was the Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator until he got the pink slip after their disappointing AFC Wild Card Round loss to the Houston Texans last season. He transfers to Foxborough to do the same job under new head coach Jerod Mayo.
New York Jets – Nathaniel Hackett
"I think the world of him. He's one of the best people I've ever met. Our sense of humor is the same...we're very lucky to have that. It's something that I'll cherish for the rest of my life."
- Nathaniel Hackett on Aaron Rodgers pic.twitter.com/QiqcKBhQ7R
— Jets Videos (@snyjets) August 14, 2024
He was the Denver Broncos head coach before joining the Jets as offensive coordinator last year. Hackett stays in the role even if the team’s postseason drought continues. The fans of New York’s AFC team hope that Hackett and Aaron Rodgers can deliver the success they enjoyed with the Green Bay Packers.
Offensive Coordinators for AFC North Teams
Baltimore Ravens – Todd Monken
Now that Todd Monken is in Year 2 as OC and has had time to evaluate last season, I asked him what identity he wants the #Ravens offense to have: “Certainly, you want to have an offense that’s a nightmare to defend.” #RavensFlock pic.twitter.com/RBih8yAoHS
— Carita Parks (@CaritaCParks) August 13, 2024
Monken will be in his second season as Ravens offensive coordinator after taking over from Greg Roman. Before joining the Ravens, Monken helped the Georgia Bulldogs win back-to-back National Championships.
Cincinnati Bengals – Dan Pitcher

— Mike Petraglia (@Trags) August 7, 2024

Dorsey, who also played for the Browns from 2006 to 2008, transfers from Buffalo to Cleveland. He takes over for previous coordinator Alex Van Pelt.
Pittsburgh Steelers – Arthur Smith
#Steelers OC Arthur Smith on the rookie O-linemen.
“The lights weren’t too big for them. … I didn’t even realize (Troy Fautanu) had an injury because he kept playing … that shows who he really is. … They played well, exactly who we thought they were when we drafted them.” pic.twitter.com/xTWgUEeGDc
— Aaron Becker (@Aaron_M_Becker) August 12, 2024
Smith was the Falcons head coach for three seasons before accepting the job as Pittsburgh’s offensive coordinator. He also had coaching stints with the Tennessee Titans and Washington. Smith will take over from Eddie Faulkner, the Steelers' interim offensive coordinator who took over from Matt Canada.
Offensive Coordinators for AFC South Teams
Houston Texans – Bobby Slowik
“Scripting definitely plays a factor as far as how the o-line is with everybody back out there,” said Texans OC Bobby Slowik. “Being a cohesive unit up front is a really big deal. Having all the starters out there, all the guys that we want working.” #Texans #BigSargeMedia pic.twitter.com/x1AAiWmEN1
— BIG SARGE MEDIA LLC (@BigSargeSportz) August 15, 2024
Bobby Slowik's success with the Texans last year made him a head coaching candidate this offseason. Instead, he will be in charge of Houston’s dynamic offense for another season. Slowik was with the 49ers before joining the Texans. While he’s now in charge of Houston’s offensive strategy, he started his coaching career on defense.
Indianapolis Colts – Jim Bob Cooter

— JJ Stankevitz (@JJStankevitz) August 16, 2024
Cooter will be in his second season as the Colts offensive coordinator under head coach Shane Steichen. However, it’s not the first time he has coached in Indianapolis because he was an offensive assistant under Jim Caldwell from 2009 to 2011.
Jacksonville Jaguars – Press Taylor
#Jaguars OC Press Taylor called Lawrence's two red-zone picks on Thursday "learning opportunities".
"Do I think he would have thrown that in a game? Probably not. For the most part, he's been good [at] decision-making. That's something I'd rather happen today than [Sept.]" pic.twitter.com/MG8A5dbSWp
— Demetrius Harvey (@Demetrius82) July 26, 2024
Taylor will enter his third season as Jaguars offensive coordinator under head coach Doug Pederson. He had various coaching positions with the Philadelphia Eagles from 2013 to 2020 before becoming the Colts’ senior offensive assistant in 2021.

Kansas City Chiefs – Matt Nagy

Getsy was the Bears offensive coordinator for two seasons before signing with the Raiders. He will be the mastermind on offense as Antonio Pierce is a defensive specialist. Gets takes over from Mick Lombardi, who was fired with Josh McDaniels and Dave Ziegler after their 2023 Week 8 game against the Lions.
Los Angeles Chargers – Greg Roman
#Chargers OC Greg Roman on the RB depth chart behind J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards:

New York Giants – Mike Kafka

Moore served as Cowboys offensive coordinator from 2019 to 2022. After a one-year stint in the same role with the Chargers, he will be the offense coordinator of the Cowboys’ most hated rival. Moore also played six seasons as quarterback for the Lions and the Cowboys.
Washington Commanders – Kliff Kingsbury

— The Coachspeak Index (@CoachspeakIndex) August 1, 2024
Johnson became a finalist for the head coaching role of the Commanders and the Seahawks. However, he chose to return to the Lions for another season and build on the success they’ve enjoyed in 2023. Johnson started with the Lions as an offensive quality control coach before becoming a tight ends coach and passing game coordinator.
Green Bay Packers – Adam Stenavich
#Packers OC Adam Stenavich on whether MarShawn Lloyd will see limited action his rookie season, ala AJ Dillon:
“No, I would like to get him out there as much as possible. He’s got a skill set that’s a little bit different than AJ’s, as far as his speed… It’ll be nice to get him… pic.twitter.com/PSWW3CbCOZ
— The Coachspeak Index (@CoachspeakIndex) May 6, 2024
Stenavich has been with the Packers since 2019, working as the offensive line coach. He then added the role of run game coordinator before becoming offensive coordinator in 2022. He and Matt LaFleur are in charge of Green Bay’s young but talented offensive nucleus.
Minnesota Vikings – Wes Phillips

With his long-time colleague getting promoted to head coach, Idzik becomes Carolina’s offensive coordinator.
New Orleans Saints – Klint Kubiak

San Francisco 49ers – Kyle Shanahan
Kyle Shanahan was asked a tough question regarding the team considering moving Brandon Aiyuk due to finances when they’re in Super Bowl window. His response:
“I don't look into anything just as a one-year deal. I think everything's tied together. I think we're as aggressive as… pic.twitter.com/5UGMVHRwwb
— Kevin Krueger (@kevinkruegs) August 16, 2024
As head coach, Shanahan serves as San Francisco’s de facto offensive coordinator. The Niners haven’t had an offensive coordinator since Mike McDaniel, who now coaches the Dolphins. Klay Kubiak is the 49ers offensive passing game specialist.
Seattle Seahawks – Ryan Grubb
#Seahawks OC Ryan Grubb on Kenneth Walker:
“I think he gets better every single day. I think the sky’s the limit for him. I think he’s a really, really talented, powerful back that’s a true three-tool guy… He’s electric out of the backfield as a pass-catcher.” pic.twitter.com/b3FAKUQHib
— The Coachspeak Index (@CoachspeakIndex) August 7, 2024
Grubb is the only offensive coordinator on this list who hasn’t coached in the NFL before. He was the offensive coordinator for the Washington Huskies when they reached the latest CFP National Championship game. He also coached for Fresno State, Eastern Michigan, Sioux Falls, and South Dakota State.
