ANALYSIS: Back in March when publishing my bold predictions piece, I poked fun at MLB editor/long-suffering Marlins fan Pierre Camus and his indefatigable optimism about Lewis Brinson. The former top prospect entered this year with a horrific .546 OPS in 821 MLB plate appearances across four seasons. As the player entered his age-27 season, even Pierre could not bring himself to yet again predict that this would the year Brinson broke out.
Except...maybe he's doing it? Since returning from another minor-league stint on July 19, Brinson has slashed .348/.411/.697 with five homers, 13 runs, and 20 RBI. For a guy who had never looked anything less than totally overmatched at the highest level, it's a stunning turnaround. The .439 BABIP is bound to fall, and strikeouts are still an issue, but Brinson may no longer be a punchline.
