ANALYSIS: The Royals' bullpen is, predictably, a mess. Brad Boxberger, Wily Peralta, and Jake Diekman all sport ERAs of 8.00 or higher, and while both Boxberger and Ian Kennedy have successfully nailed down a save, they've each blown one as well. None of the aforementioned pitchers have particularly long track records of success in relief, or inspire much confidence.
Enter Kyle Zimmer. The fifth overall pick in the 2012 draft, a bevy of injuries nearly derailed the 27-year-old's career before he finally made it to the majors this year on the back of an excellent spring. His first appearance- a clean inning with two strikeouts - suggests he could find himself in position for saves. Thursday's work - in which he walked all three batters he faced, two of whom came around to score - was less encouraging, but there's a strong argument to be made that Zimmer is the most talented pitcher in the beleaguered KC bullpen.
This is a deeply speculative add, but owners desperate for saves would do well to at least keep Zimmer on their radar, if not yet their rosters.
