Zimmer has been very impressive in the minor leagues since his pro debut in 2012. Blessed with electric strikeout stuff (thank you mid-to-high 90s fastball and sweet looping curveball), he’s always done better than a strikeout per inning in every pro year. Zimmer’s momentum has been slowed by various arm/side issues along the way, with the latest being a setback after offseason arthroscopic shoulder surgery, and so he operated as a reliever while he got his arm back up to speed. He still struck out 51 in 48 innings with a 2.81 ERA and 1.17 WHIP. Kansas City hopes that Zimmer can stay healthy enough to develop into a reliable starter, but if he is unable to put together consistent innings then he may be destined for bullpen duties. Also worth noting that Danny Duffy, Chris Young, and Kris Medlen shouldn’t be able to stave off a healthy Zimmer for long once the mid-2016 rolls around.
