ANALYSIS: Kevin Newman has hit safely in 14 of his last 15 games. He's logged multiple hits in six of those contests, and the only game where he didn't get a knock he was 0-for-1 as a pinch hitter.
The rookie has taken command of the starting shortstop role in Pittsburgh, slashing .314/.364/.430 with a pair of home runs and four stolen bases in 50 games. The counting stats certainly aren't eye-popping, but Newman did swipe 28 bags at Triple-A last season, so we know there's speed here. Combined with a high-contact approach, that could make him a sneaky source of steals in the season's second half.
Newman has also served as the Pirates' leadoff hitter for the entire month of June after languishing at the bottom of the order earlier in the season. If he can stick there, he should score enough runs to contribute in that category for fantasy owners as well.
