ANALYSIS: Over the past two seasons, Kevin Gausman has flashed the potential that led the Orioles to select him with the fourth pick in the 2012 MLB Amateur Draft. He has yet to put it all together or log more than 115 innings in a season, however. There are plenty of observers who think he's better suited to the bullpen because his secondary offerings haven't really emerged to complement his heat. That, plus a hitter-friendly home park, has led to issues with the long ball. But in his first three starts this season, Gausman has allowed only one home run and showed improved control.
While he has just 14 strikeouts in his 19 innings, Gausman is getting hitters to chase more often. Thus far it's resulted in weaker contact. We might reasonably expect a few more whiffs going forward, beginning with his turn tonight in Minnesota. Of course, we also have to allow for regression on his .176 BABIP. Still, Gausman's pedigree makes him a potential post-hype sleeper.
