Analysis: Why does it take a big injury to Wade Davis for two-time All-Star Kelvin Herrera to get some love? Herrera has improved upon his already dominant relief game in 2016 and has been lights-out good. He has a 2.09 ERA, 0.93 WHIP, and 11.1 K/9 in an improvement from his 8.3 K/9 from last season. Most impressive, however, is Herrera's walk rate. After walking 3.2, 3.3, and 3.4 batters per nine IP from 2013-2015, Herrera has a BB/9 of just 1.4 this season. After Wade Davis hit the DL, Herrera was finally able to earn save opportunities and has produced three saves in his past six appearances. The other good news is that Herrera seems to have broken free of his Kansas City competition. Luke Hochevar has a 3.86 ERA and is on the 15-day DL, Joakim Soria has a 4.22 ERA, Chien-Ming Wang has a 4.87 ERA, Dillon Gee sits at 4.54, Brian Flynn at 3.06, Peter Moylan at 3.77, and Danny Duffy has been dominant as a starter. Kelvin Herrera has a solid hold on the 9th inning and is having a dominant season.
