ANALYSIS: Josh Harrison hit his third home run of the year on Friday, bringing his overall line to a zesty .325/.416/.494. Because he's a career second-division starter and utility infielder who will turn 34 in July, you might be tempted to write this off as a mirage of a hot start. But there may well be more here.
Harrison began experimenting with a new batting grip last year, and fully adopted a "split" grip this spring. It's rare for hitters to hold the bat this way but some, like ageless wonder Nelson Cruz, have found success by spacing their hands further apart. Given his results thus far, Harrison appears to have benefited from the change. His walk and strikeout rates (both 9%) are career bests, and his expected wOBA of .388 isn't far from his .399 actual mark. He's been a regular presence near the top of the Nationals' lineup the last few weeks and has a firm grip on the starting job at second base.
