Fantasy Baseball Impact Of The Baltimore Orioles Activating Relief Pitcher Jorge Lopez
The Baltimore Orioles activated veteran relief pitcher Jorge Lopez on Sunday, per a tweet from the American League East club’s official Twitter account.
The Orioles tweeted the following:
It’s a bit of a reunion as Lopez spent parts of three seasons with Baltimore from 2020 through 2022, including last season when he earned All-Star honors thanks to a strong first half with the Orioles. Traded to the Twins at the deadline, Lopez now rejoins the Orioles (he was previously claimed off waivers) after starting the year in Minnesota.
The veteran also pitched for the Miami Marlins this season after being traded for the second summer in a row – this time in a deal for fellow reliever Dylan Floro. Overall, he’s pitched to a 6.00 ERA and a 5.68 FIP in 50 appearances spanning 48 innings combined for the three clubs this season. He’s added 36 strikeouts while surrendering 20 walks and eight home runs on the season.
All told, the 30-year-old has also accumulated six pitcher wins, three saves and seven holds so far. Based on his struggles this season, he seems unlikely to step back into the closer’s role for Baltimore after logging 23 saves for the club in 2022. However, with Felix Bautista currently on the injured list, Lopez will give the team some additional late-inning bullpen depth.
As of right now, he’s probably not an option for fantasy managers outside of those in deeper saves+holds leagues.
