ANALYSIS: Jordan Montgomery got the job done in his first start of 2018, allowing just one run on two hits in five innings of a 11-4 win over the Rays. He wasn't perfect - note the four walks, which kept him from going deep enough into the game to factor into the decision - but on a cold day in the Bronx where he clearly didn't have his best stuff, Montgomery successfully battled through. He relied heavily on his curveball and changeup; they're his two best offerings, so that's what you want to see. His fastball averaged only 90 MPH on the day (down from 92 last season), but reduced velo in an early-season cold-weather game isn't exactly cause for alarm. Gumby still managed to induce a 12.5 SwStr% rate on the day, right in line with the 12.2% mark he produced as a rookie.
Montgomery will face the free-swinging Orioles at home on Sunday and should be rostered in all formats going forward.
