Analysis: Jon Gray got off to a rough start in 2016 by giving up five earned runs, two walks, and seven hits in just five innings pitched in the notoriously hitter-friendly Coors Field. While Gray has never been remarkable in limiting walks (evidenced by a career mark of 3.2 BB/9), he has been fantastic at producing high volume strikeouts with a major league figure of 9.9 K/9. When hitters make contact on Gray, they typically produce fly balls, which is certainly not ideal when you make Denver your home turf. However, Gray's style does tend to produce fantastic results on the road. In six career home starts, Gray has an 8.42 ERA, 1.987 WHIP, and only produces 8.8 K/9. However, in four career road starts Gray averages a 2.70 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, and reaches his true strikeout potential at 11.3 K/9. Gray's status as a highly touted prospect doesn't exclude him from the horrors of Coors Field, but Gray has proved that when he makes road starts, he is a very solid option for a great outing filled with whiffs.
