Analysis: After being promoted to the closer role as a result of Huston Street’s injury, 32-year-old Joe Smith has been solid for the most part. This isn’t the veteran’s first foray into the closer position, as he recorded 15 saves two years ago and five saves last season. Smith has been far from perfect this year, but he’s gotten the job done for the most part. While he’s striking out fewer batters, he’s also walking fewer batters and has dropped his BABIP significantly, going from .317 to .258 on the season. While Huston Street appears to be taking steps towards returning, Smith remains the best closer option in Anaheim. Recently, he recorded three consecutive saves across six days, firing three shutout innings in the process. A closer emerging in the waiver wire is always a hot commodity, and if you somehow find yourself in a league where Smith is available, an extra closer never hurts.
