Analysis: With Huston Street still on the DL, the closer role in Anaheim lies with Joe Smith. Smith has accumulated two saves and three holds with the Angels thus far. Owning an ERA of 4.50 and a WHIP of 1.25, Smith's season doesn't exactly jump off of the page, although there are some very encouraging signs. First, Smith is walking just 1.7 batters per 9 IP. Second, he is hampering LHB significantly by allowing a slash line of just .226/.314/.323, while his trouble is clearly coming against RHB who are slugging .483 against him. Third, Smith has dominated at home with an ERA of 2.35, a WHIP of 0.783, and an allowed slash line of just .154/.290/.192. While these figures do not depict great consistency, they do demonstrate that Smith isn't a bad pitcher. Even though he has had some trouble limiting HR, Smith is a heavy career ground ball pitcher who doesn't walk batters frequently. He can be trusted moving forward.
