Analysis: The Houston Astros dealt Scott Feldman to Toronto at the deadline and immediately promoted 23-year old #83 overall Baseball America prospect Joe Musgrove. At 6'5'' and 265 lbs., he is an intimidating physical force on the mound who has been shredding through batters in the minor leagues. Since 2011 Musgrove has pitched 337 innings in the minors from Bluefield to Fresno. In that span he produced a 2.83 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, 0.64 HR/9, and 8.55 K/9. Most impressively, Musgrove has demonstrated extremely mature command and control as he allowed just 1.09 BB/9 in six seasons. Musgrove has completely earned his ranking as Houston's #6 organization prospect and the #83 prospect in all of baseball. He was called up to replace Feldman and possibly to fill in for Doug Fister whose wife was going into labor. It may be hard to see Musgrove getting consistent starts but he is very talented, tested, and mature beyond his years. If the Astros want to make a postseason run, Musgrove could be a key in the back end of the rotation.
