ANALYSIS: Chicago White Sox relief pitcher Joakim Soria has seemed to distance himself as the closer for the White Sox, at least in the early going of the 2018 season. Who would hold down this job was one of the big unknowns through the offseason, as many speculated that young relievers Nate Jones or Juan Minaya would get a chance. Once Joakim Soria was traded to the Sox in January, GM Rick Hahn said it would "provide us with veteran depth and enhanced flexibility." The team does not figure to contend in 2018, but they decided to hand the closer reigns over to Soria, who has registered two saves in the early going of the season. While he has registered two saves, he also blew a save on April 5, allowing three runs on four hits in an inning of work.
While Soria only closed one game in each of the last two seasons as a setup man in Kansas City, he's kept a K/BB over 3.0 in three of the last four seasons and has maintained a SIERA under 3.50 in all but one of his 10 Major League seasons. He may not be the shutdown closer he once was early in his career, but Soria does have value as long as he holds down the closer's role in the Windy City. With saves being a precious currency in fantasy baseball, Soria has value as a mid-to-lower tier RP as the closer for the White Sox.
