ANALYSIS: Jeff Hoffman's MLB career has gotten off to a promising start. Even with a disastrous outing against the Diamondbacks last week, Hoffman's sitting on a 4-1 record, 4.04 ERA, and 1.16 WHIP through eight games (seven starts). Toss out that stinker - you really should have known better than to throw a rookie at Coors against Arizona anyway - and those ratios fall to 2.33 and 1.01, respectively. The 24-year-old, a first round pick in the 2014 amateur draft, has 44 strikeouts against just 11 walks in his 42 1/3 innings. Even more impressively for a Rockies pitcher, he's allowed only three home runs, and two of them came in his first two appearances. If he qualified, Hoffman's 18.7 K-BB% would be tied for 15th among starting pitchers.
As with any young pitcher, consistency and workload will be issues to monitor. So far, though, Hoffman looks every bit like the top prospect he was billed as.
