BALLER MOVE: Add In Standard Leagues
OWNED IN: 42% of leagues
ANALYSIS: Currently sixth in the Eastern Conference playoff standings, the Detroit Pistons were dealt a considerable blow when starting point guard Reggie Jackson went down with an ankle sprain. He’s not expected back until after the All-Star break, meaning backup Ish Smith has been catapulted to the starting lineup. The 29-year-old was the regular starting point guard for the Philadelphia 76ers two seasons ago, finishing with career highs in points and assists at 14 and seven, respectively. This clearly indicates that Smith has what it takes to be a serviceable starter.
In three starts since Jackson’s injury, the Wake Forest product is averaging 14 points, four assists and five rebounds, terrific numbers for an everyday guard that can be found available at the moment. Of course, those who decide to pick Smith up have to realize he’s a short-term fix whose value will decline once Jackson returns. Regardless, he should be a terrific pickup to start the year and someone who everyone should consider. Available in more than half of fantasy basketball leagues, he should be picked up sooner rather than later. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to declare him the best player available through waiver wire at the moment.
