The Cincinnati Bengals went through some changes at the running back position this offseason. They traded away veteran running back Joe Mixon to the Houston Texans for a 2024 seventh-round pick and then signed Zack Moss to a two-year, $8 million deal in March.
Moss will now join young running back Chase Brown in the Bengals' backfield. Brown was drafted in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL Draft and showed some promise down the stretch for Cincinnati.
So, is Moss or Brown the RB1 for the Bengals? Let's dive in and find out.

Who is the Cincinnati Bengals' RB1?
At this point in the offseason, it is hard to know what the Bengals will do for certain at the running back position in 2024. However, Moss is likely the favorite to be the team's RB1, while Brown could see more of a role on passing downs this upcoming season.
Both running backs showed some great things last season, but the experience of Moss could help him win the job. He also was almost unstoppable as the Colts' starting running back in four games to start the year without Jonathan Taylor. In those starts from Week 2 to Week 5, the 26-year-old had 89 carries for 445 yards and three touchdowns. That four-game stretch could have been a large reason why the Bengals signed him in the first place.
As for Brown, he might be better used in the receiving game, considering his speed. Last year, the 24-year-old had at least two catches in four of the last five games of the season. He also totaled at least 50 scrimmage yards in four of the last six games of the year from Week 13 to Week 18.

With the departure of Mixon this offseason, the Bengals running back room will look slightly different in 2024. However, the team does have two efficient backs to help carry the load this upcoming season. So, expect Moss to handle the early down work and Brown to be used more on passing downs.
