Is Zach Ertz Out For The Rest Of The Season?
Arizona's star tight end Zach Ertz was injured in the Cardinals' Week 10 game against the Los Angeles Rams. The veteran TE was carted off the field after suffering an apparent knee injury.
Initial reports speculated that Ertz had avoided a season-ending injury. Unfortunately, it looks as though an MRI on Monday did reveal significant damage to his knee. Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reports that Ertz will indeed be out for the remainder of the season due to the injury.
Should I Pickup Trey McBride?
It is hard to imagine that anyone will be able to fill the star tight end's shoes in this Arizona offense, as Ertz was a key cog in the Cards' passing attack. He had totaled 406 receiving yards and four TDs on 47 receptions prior to going down in Week 10.
The next man up at the TE position for Arizona is expected to be rookie Trey McBride. McBride played on 91% of the Cards' offensive snaps with 76% route participation after Ertz went down in Week 10, though he was only targeted once and made one grab for seven yards.
In addition to McBride, the Cardinals have Stephen Anderson on the 53-man roster and Maxx Williams on the practice squad.
McBride is an athletic freak who Arizona drafted in the second round of the 2021 NFL draft. We can expect him to get the first shot at filling the role Ertz leaves behind.
The tight end position is consistently a headache for fantasy GMs and that's especially the case for Ertz managers after Monday's grim news. McBride is a prospect that many draft experts really liked coming out of Colorado State, but he's been a non-factor to this point of his rookie campaign, and has logged just four catches for 31 yards. Those in super-deep and TE Premium leagues can take a flyer on the rookie, but shouldn't expect him to duplicate the production that Ertz provided.
