Is Tyjae Spears Hurt or Healthy? Fantasy Football Injury Update

Tyjae Spears - Fantasy Football Rankings, Draft Sleepers, Waiver Wire Pickups

Tennessee Titans running back Tyjae Spears (ankle) had a promising first season in the NFL serving as the backup running back to Derrick Henry. With Henry's departure, Spears was set to have a bigger role this season after being mainly a passing down and 3rd down back in 2023.

That hasn't exactly materialized. The Titans signed veteran RB Tony Pollard who's taken most of the workload through two games, with Spears playing clear second fiddle. Now, Spears has appeared on the injury report as of Wednesday, September 18.

Is Tyjae Spears hurt or healthy now? Will Spears play in Week 3? Let's dive into his injury updates and fantasy football outlook.

Be sure to check all of our fantasy football rankings for 2024:

Tyjae Spears Injury Update for Fantasy Football

Spears left the Week 2 game against the New York Jets with an ankle injury and did not return. While his fantasy managers may be concerned that his exit to the locker room could signify an extended absence, Spears is confident the injury isn't long-term.

This is good news for Spears managers. It's most likely that he suffered a mild low-ankle sprain or rolled ankle, which are relatively minor injuries. Many players don't miss any time after these types of injuries, as they may only need a few days to heal to the point the player can play again.

It may linger for a while, but it shouldn't affect his fantasy performance in a big way. Often minor injuries like these are more about pain tolerance. However, it is worth noting that Spears' biggest asset is his elusiveness, aided by sharp and fast cuts, so any lingering ankle aliment could have minor effects on his performance.

Tyjae Spears Fantasy Football Outlook

Spears' role as one half of a supposed 50/50 split in the Titans backfield hasn't materialized. The Titans' coaching staff had indicated through much of the offseason that Pollard and Spears would receive a mostly even split of the backfield work, but Pollard has dominated touches so far.

Titans HC Brian Callahan reiterated his desire for a more even split involving more touches for Spears in a recent press conference. Though his production and usage have been disappointing so far, Spears owners should expect an uptick in his workload as the season has gone on.

Spears certainly has the athleticism, burst, instincts, and vision to be a productive NFL back. He'll just need more opportunities. He's a fantastic asset in the passing game, so he should earn more targets, which would benefit Spears managers in PPR leagues greatly.

The Titans should make it a priority to make Spears in space a key component of the passing and rushing attack, and Spears's managers will hope Callahan sticks to his word, because for now, Spears isn't worth starting, and won't be as long as his workload remains so meager.
