After a brief stint as a legitimate quarterback in 2021, Taysom Hill is being moved back to tight end for the New Orleans Saints in 2022. Thanks to his rushing upside at the QB position, he was a fun option to start in fantasy, but those days appear to be over.
Hill caught 34 passes for 387 yards and seven touchdowns in five seasons with the Saints under Sean Payton. It doesn’t take a mathematics expert to figure out that’s less than 100 yards per season, so we have no evidence of receiving excellence. Of course, he added yards through the air and on the ground, but can we expect any of that production under the new regime in New Orleans?
Chances are, Saints’ head coach Dennis Allen, and offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael aren’t going to be creative with Hill’s usage like Payton was. If we’re viewing Hill through purely a tight end lens, it’s unlikely we see fantasy-relevant production. After all, Adam Trautman is the far superior tight end talent and his receiving profile makes him a legitimate player with at least some fantasy intrigue. The Saints listed Trautman and Hill as co-starters in its first unofficial depth chart of the preseason, should we even be paying attention to either of them? Probably not.
With Michael Thomas, Chris Olave, Jarvis Landry, and Marquez Callaway as target competition, it’s difficult to find a path for fantasy success for either tight end. Additionally, Jameis Winston wasn't a high-volume passer last season like his days in Tampa Bay, and we can expect the same this season.
Should I Draft Taysom Hill in Fantasy Football?
For the past few seasons, Hill was a fun deep-league stash in hopes he’d get to play quarterback, but that’s not going to happen again, especially after the team added Andy Dalton this offseason. Hill said he didn’t want to move to tight end in the first place, so it’s just tough to get excited about him. However, If you insist on drafting a Saints’ TE, Trautman is the way to go. He at least has a college resume of 1500 yards and 23 touchdowns.
