Houston Texans wide receiver Tank Dell has been a surprise star in his rookie year. He has also become a reliable fantasy starter in 10-plus team leagues this year. After catching his first touchdown pass of the season in Week 2, Dell was a popular waiver wire add across all formats.
That success has continued for the rookie. But unfortunately, Dell could be in jeopardy of missing Week 6 after leaving last week's contest with a concussion.
Is Dell injured or healthy? Will he play in Week 6? Let's dive in.
Tank Dell Injury Update for Fantasy Football
Dell was well on his way to another solid fantasy day in Week 5 before leaving the game early with a head injury late in the second quarter. Rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud found the young wideout open in the middle of the field for a 29-yard gain to get Houston into field goal range.
On the catch, Dell came down and banged his head hard on the turf. The diving attempt forced him out of the game with a concussion.
Since Sunday's game, Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans has confirmed that Dell is in the concussion protocol and must complete the five-step process before returning to game action in Week 6. That puts the rookie in jeopardy of missing the first NFL game of his career against the New Orleans Saints this weekend.
Tank Dell Fantasy Football Outlook
The NFL has tightened up on the concussion protocols since Tua Tagovailoa's horrific head injury last year. Since then, not many players, if any, have suffered a concussion on Sunday and played exactly one week later the following Sunday. Players like Jimmy Garoppolo and Logan Thomas were both diagnosed with concussions this year and also missed the following game.
That likely means Dell has an outside chance of returning in Week 6. With the Texans also having a bye in Week 7, the team could decide to give the rookie extra rest from his head injury. If he does miss this week, though, he should be all good to return in Week 8.
Upon his return, Dell will remain an intriguing weekly flex option on a solid offense. Stroud has developed a strong connection with the rookie wideout already and that bond will only grow as the season progresses.
