We're all familiar with the popular phrase "add insult to injury". In the case of Ronald Jones, we're adding injury to insult. The Dallas Cowboys added the veteran running back to bolster their backfield depth this offseason, but it is has been a disastrous training camp so far.
The two-time Super Bowl champion was slapped with a two-game suspension at the end of July for PEDs. Now, he's suffering from an injury and will miss a chunk of practice time.
What does Jones' injury mean for fantasy football, both in his case and the Cowboys' backfield as a whole?
Ronald Jones Injury Update For Fantasy Football
Ronald Jones has been diagnosed with a groin injury, and there is no set timetable for a return to the practice field. According to coach Mike McCarthy, he will "miss some time." He suffered the injury during the team's scrimmage on Saturday.
Ronald Jones 2023 Fantasy Football Outlook
The Cowboys signed Jones in March in the hopes that he could back up Tony Pollard, but at this point, there are questions on if he'll make the team at all. On the team's unofficial depth chart, the ex-Tampa Bay starter was listed as the fourth-string running back, behind Rico Dowdle and Malik Davis.
Pollard is, of course, a lock to make the roster. At various points this training camp, McCarthy has complimented the play of both Dowdle and Davis. Plus, rookie sixth-round pick Deuce Vaughn has been making an impression in camp, and is projected to be used in certain packages.
There have also been rumors that the Cowboys could bring back Ezekiel Elliott. That leaves very little room on this roster. There is no need to draft Ronald Jones in fantasy football.
