New England Patriots tight end Mike Gesicki was the 42nd overall pick by the Miami Dolphins in the 2018 NFL Draft. Gesicki had a productive college career, totaling 129 receptions for 1,481 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns in four years at Penn State.
Unfortunately, he had a limited rookie year, totaling 22 receptions on 32 targets for 202 receiving yards. However, Gesicki had a breakout sophomore season. The former Penn State star had 51 receptions on 89 targets for 570 receiving yards and five touchdowns.
Gesicki arguably had the best years of his career in 2020 and 2021. He had 53 receptions on 85 targets for 703 receiving yards and six touchdowns in 2020. The following year the former Penn State star had 73 receptions on 112 targets for 780 receiving yards and two touchdowns, setting a career-high receptions, targets, and receiving yards.

What Did Mike Gesicki Accomplish In 2022?
Following his career year in 2021, the Dolphins placed the franchise tag on the veteran tight end. However, new head coach Mike McDaniel never made Gesicki a consistent part of the offense.
Last year the former Penn State had 32 receptions on 52 targets for 362 receiving yards and five touchdowns. While the five receiving touchdowns were the second-most in his career, Gesicki had the lowest receptions, targets, and receiving yards since his rookie season.
More importantly, the former Penn State star was the TE22, averaging 4.8 half-point PPR fantasy points per game. He averaged fewer fantasy points per game than Jordan Akins (6.5), Noah Fant (5.7), Irv Smith Jr. (5.3), and Daniel Bellinger (5.0).

However, Gesicki is a popular deep sleeper tight end this year after signing with the Patriots in the offseason. The veteran tight end has had a productive offseason and training camp in New England. Unfortunately, he suffered an injury during Monday’s practice.
Gesicki suffered a mild dislocated shoulder during practice. He left the field hunched over and clearly in pain. However, the Patriots hope the veteran tight end will be ready for Week 1.
Unfortunately, Gesicki’s sleeper appeal likely is over because of the injury. However, the veteran has been fantasy relevant in the past. If he can play in Week 1, the former Penn State star should have some weeks this season as a viable streaming option.
