Former Notre Dame tight end Michael Mayer was regarded as the top tight end in the 2023 NFL Draft class by many analysts and mock drafters, but after not being selected in the first round, he was picked by the Las Vegas Raiders in round two.
He was just the third player at the position selected during this draft cycle, but he ultimately still got solid draft capital and will be an intriguing fantasy asset moving forward.

What Did Michael Mayer Accomplish At Notre Dame?
As a true freshman, Mayer caught 42 passes for 420 yards and two touchdowns. It wasn't a dominant year, but it was impressive for a player sharing a tight end room with NFL players Brock Wright and Tommy Tremble. However, his production would pick up in year two.
The 21-year-old caught 138 passes for 1,649 yards and 16 touchdowns over his final two seasons in South Bend. He was a Third-Team All-American in 2021 and First-Team All-American in 2022 and finished as a Mackey Award finalist in both seasons.
He had NFL interest since his sophomore season, and ultimately become one of the highest-drafter players at his position.
Is Michael Mayer A Good Fit For The Raiders?
The Raiders currently have Austin Hooper on the roster, but Mayer is clearly the tight end of the future to replace Darren Waller. Year one production could be tough to find for Mayer since he's set to share the field with one of the league's greatest target hogs in Davante Adams – and Jakobi Meyers has been a high-volume target since he entered the league, too.
That said, he may not be a top-12 tight end as a rookie, but that should be the expectation later on in his career.
Mayer is a polished all-around tight end, so there's also a chance he could exceed expectations. Either way, this feels like a good landing spot since head coach Josh McDaniels is known for utilizing tight ends heavily.
