The Buffalo Bills signed veteran running back Latavius Murray to a one-year contract worth $1,317,500. That deal includes a $152,500 signing bonus and $802,500 guaranteed at signing. The numbers may seem low, but Murray will have an important role to play with the Bills.
Buffalo ranked seventh in rushing yards per game last season (139.5). However, they lost their leading rusher last season, Devin Singletary, to free agency. He had 819 of Buffalo’s 2,232 yards last season, and taking that production away will be a huge blow to their run game.
Josh Allen had the second-most rushing yards for the Bills, mostly from extending broken plays. While it’s great that he is aware when the pocket crumbles, taking off by himself exposes him to vicious tackles. They better call off their season if he misses a lot of games.
Therefore, they need a stable option from the backfield, and Murray can fill that role. He played the same role for the Denver Broncos last season when Javonte Williams suffered a season-ending injury. Murray had decent numbers (703 yards, five touchdowns) even though the Broncos did not make the playoffs.
There Are Better Fantasy Football Options Than Latavius Murray
Murray will be a vital cog in the Bills’ quest for a Super Bowl title. He will be playing behind a talented offensive line, granted that they are not dealing with injuries. His veteran leadership will also help the younger backs.
However, it’s not yet sure if he will be the primary weapon from the backfield. He will have to compete with James Cook, Damien Harris, and Nyheim Hines for the starting role. But even if he becomes RB1, he only contributes to the running game, which might not translate to a good amount of fantasy points. Murray doesn’t contribute much to the passing game, making his game one-dimensional.
Allen’s tendency to run the ball also diminishes his chances of collecting yards. Therefore, Murray won’t offer much value fantasy-wise. But in terms of helping the Bills win, he has the experience and knowledge to do so.
It’s difficult to see him in a Bills uniform beyond 2023, especially if general manager Brandon Beane has his sights on a running back. But it’s his team now, and making the Bills run game a decent threat is his primary goal.
