The Atlanta Falcons made a massive investment in quarterback Kirk Cousins, signing him to a four-year, $180 million contract. Therefore, they expect him to lead the NFC South franchise to their first winning season and playoff appearance since 2017.
However, his health will be vital to his success, especially since he suffered a season-ending torn Achilles last year. That condition limited him to eight games, his lowest total since 2014. Since he’s not getting any younger, the Falcons hope he’ll recover in time for the 2024 NFL season.
Luckily for Atlanta, the four-time Pro Bowler cleared a significant physical hurdle during training camp. Barring any additional injury, Cousins will be the undisputed Week 1 starter.

Kirk Cousins Injury Update
Multiple news sources confirmed that the veteran quarterback didn’t begin training camp on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list. That development means he’s medically cleared from his torn Achilles injury and can participate in team practices.
Cousins suffered the injury in Week 8 of the 2023 season when he led the Minnesota Vikings against the Green Bay Packers. It’s been nine months since then, putting his recovery at the typical timeline for Achilles injuries.

With Cousins medically cleared, the Falcons hope he will be available throughout the 17-game regular season and the playoffs, should they clinch a berth. That scenario will boost his fantasy football prospects, especially with talented players like Bijan Robinson, Drake London, and Kyle Pitts around him.
Will Kirk Cousins Be Ready for Week 1?
Even if the Falcons drafted Michael Penix Jr., Cousins would be the top quarterback on the depth chart. He can solidify that spot by strengthening his Achilles to perform like he did pre-injury. A smooth training camp should make him available for Atlanta’s season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

An injury-free season should make it easy for Kirk Cousins to match or surpass his 2022 numbers (424 completions, 4,547 passing yards, 29 touchdowns). However, the Falcons will be tested as they face the Steelers, the Philadelphia Eagles, and the Kansas City Chiefs in their first three games.
