The James Conner (knee) injury has opened things up in the Arizona Cardinals backfield. Undrafted rookie running back Emari Demercado was a hot commodity on the waiver wire last week due to his emergence after Conner left in Week 5.
But two other Cardinal running backs in Keaontay Ingram and Damien Williams joined in on the fun during the team's Week 6 loss. Ingram, who was listed as the RB1, took Arizona's first carry of the game.
So, should you pick up Ingram off waivers this week? Let's take a look.
What Did Keaontay Ingram Do In Week 6?
When Ingram was listed as the RB1 before the Los Angeles Rams game, it was expected he was likely going to receive most of the backfield rushes. After all, Arizona viewed Demercado more as a receiving back, and that showed in the Cardinals' 26-9 loss.
Ingram ran 10 times for 40 yards in the contest while also catching two passes for 11 yards. It wasn't the best fantasy game for the second year back. But he was the team's primary early-down back with Demarcado filling in on third downs and in passing situations.
Overall, Ingram played 28 snaps, and Demarcado saw 33 snaps. However, it was a surprise to see veteran Damien Williams play 13 snaps in the game, despite just coming off the practice squad. It appears this Arizona backfield will be a three-back committee until Conner returns from his knee issue.
Is Keaontay Ingram A Good Fantasy Football Pickup For Week 7?
With all the running back injuries and six teams on bye in Week 7, Ingram could be a solid depth piece off waivers in 12-plus team leagues. But don't expect much production from the 23-year-old back going forward. He's probably a weekly low-end flex play in deeper formats.
The Cardinals often find themselves behind in games this season, which would call for more action for Demarcado in the passing game. Also, mix in Williams out of the backfield, and Ingram is probably looking at somewhere between 25 and 32 snaps every game.
Ingram will be tough to trust every week in fantasy. However, he does look like the team's RB1 and is the Cardinals' primary rusher right now. He out-carried both Williams (8) and Demercado (2) in Week 6. That alone makes the second-year back a necessary depth piece to add in 12-plus team leagues.
