Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Kadarius Toney was the 20th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft by the New York Giants. Toney had a productive college career, totaling 120 receptions for 1,590 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns. He also had 66 rushing attempts for 580 yards and two touchdowns during his three years at Florida.
Unfortunately, the former Gator had a quiet rookie season. He had 39 receptions on 57 targets for 420 receiving yards and zero touchdowns. The rookie missed seven games because of injuries. Toney finished the year as the WR95, averaging 6.3 half-point PPR fantasy points per game.
Despite his rookie season struggles, fantasy players had high hopes for the former Gator wide receiver. Unfortunately, things didn’t go the way fantasy players were hoping for last season.

What Did Kadarius Toney Accomplish In 2022?
Last year the young wide receiver only played two games with the Giants because of injury. Toney had only two receptions on three targets for zero receiving yards. He also had two rushing attempts for 33 receiving yards with the team.
However, Toney got dealt to the Chiefs before the trade deadline. Unfortunately, injuries followed him to Kansas City. The former Gator receiver had only 14 receptions on 17 targets for 171 receiving yards and the first two touchdowns of his career in seven games with the Chiefs.
While many had high hopes for the second-year receiver, Toney ended the 2022 season as the WR107, averaging only 5.5 fantasy points per game. Furthermore, he averaged only 6.6 fantasy points per game in the seven contests with Kansas City last year.
Is Kadarius Toney A Breakout Candidate In 2023?
Toney is a popular breakout candidate this season. The Chiefs lost JuJu Smith-Schuster in free agency, opening up the No. 1 wide receiver role in Kansas City.
However, the team is reportedly in the mix to land DeAndre Hopkins. Furthermore, Skyy Moore has been the star of the Chiefs’ offseason. Meanwhile, there are two concerns with Toney.
The first is the injury history. Toney has missed 44.1% of the games in his career because of injury. The second issue is the lack of production when on the field. He has scored under 5.5 fantasy points in 63.2% of the games in his career. There are too many red flags for me to consider Toney a likely breakout candidate.
