Former Alabama wide receiver John Metchie III was selected in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft after a strong junior season, but unfortunately, he was diagnosed with Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia before he ever took a snap, and missed his entire rookie season.
The Texans have hoped Metchie would be able to return in the near future and we have a new update regarding his status for 2022.
Will Metchie play in 2023 and what is his fantasy football outlook? Let's dive in.

Will John Metchie Play in 2023?
The 22-year-old wideout was spotted at Houston's offseason workouts Wednesday and he is expected to be ready to play at the start of the 2023 season. It's great news for Metchie after a scary diagnosis, but he'll now get to live out his dream of playing in the NFL as soon as next season kicks off.
Metchie joins Nico Collins a group of veteran wide receivers who were signed this offseason. Brandin Cooks was traded to the Dallas Cowboys in late March, so there are targets up for grabs from whoever is leading the Texans' offense at QB.
John Metchie 2023 Fantasy Outlook
While Metchie has a chance to surpass Robert Woods, Noah Brown, Dalton Schultz, and Collins in the target pecking order, it's tough to see a path toward real fantasy upside of any Texans' offensive skill players. It's unclear which quarterback Houston could be targeting in the 2023 NFL Draft (if at all), but wideouts usually struggle as fantasy football assets with a rookie QB under center.
Additionally, Metchie will see his first action since tearing his ACL in the 2021 SEC Championship game, so it could take time for him to get back into the flow of things.
Either way, he can be viewed as an intriguing late-round dart throw in deep fantasy football leagues as his upside is completely unknown at this point in his career. The former No. 44 overall pick was taken early for a reason, so expect Houston to try to get him involved in the offense as soon as possible.
