Is Jimmy Garoppolo Out For The Rest Of The Season?
San Francisco's starting QB was injured early in the Niners' Week 13 game against the Miami Dolphins. Garoppolo was carted off the field with what appeared to be a foot or ankle injury.
Unfortunately, it looks as though Jimmy G's injury is significant. Niners HC Kyle Shanahan confirmed to the media after Week 13's win over Miami that Garoppolo would require season-ending surgery on his broken foot.
Should I Pickup Brock Purdy?
The Niners' horrible injury luck at the QB position continues, as they've now lost not one but two starting QBs this year, as Jimmy Garoppolo joins San Fran's season-opening starter, Trey Lance, on the sidelines for the remainder of 2022.
The next man up at the QB position for San Francisco is expected to be rookie Brock Purdy. Purdy played well in relief of Garoppolo in Week 13. The rookie completed 25 of 37 pass attempts for 210 yards and two TDs en route to a win over the Miami Dolphins, while also tossing one INT.
To add some depth behind Purdy, the Niners have signed veteran journeyman Josh Johnson off the Denver Broncos practice squad.
Purdy played his college ball at Iowa State and spent four years as a productive QB in Cyclones HC Matt Campbell's offense. He threw for 12,170 yards and 81 TDs with 33 INTs across his college career. The Niners selected him with the last pick of the 2022 NFL Draft.
The rookie lacks the physical tools of a prototypical NFL starting QB, as his size and arm strength are both average at best. Purdy does have lots of college experience under his belt and relies on his excellent accuracy.
He is a good fit for Kyle Shanahan's run-heavy offensive scheme and - despite his 37 pass attempts against Miami Sunday - will likely be used by the Niners in a game-manager type of role. Purdy's fantasy impact will probably be minimal, so those in standard leagues can leave him on the wire. Fantasy managers in Two-QB or SuperFlex leagues can give the rookie a look if they are in need of depth.
