The New Orleans Saints have arguably the top running back unit in the NFL. Alvin Kamara has been the starter for the past several years. The star running back has averaged nearly 12 scrimmage touchdowns per season in his career, totaling 13 or more three times.
While Kamara has been one of the top running backs in the NFL over the past several years, the Saints made some additions in the offseason. The first addition was Jamaal Williams. The former BYU star spent the past two years with the Detroit Lions, totaling 1,667 rushing yards and 20 touchdowns in 30 games.
However, that wasn’t the last addition to the New Orleans backfield. The Saints spent a third-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft on Kendre Miller. The former TCU running back had an excellent college career, totaling over 25 rushing touchdowns while averaging 6.7 yards per rushing attempt.

Is Jamaal Williams Or Kendre Miller The Saints Primary RB With Alvin Kamara Suspended?
The Saints added Williams and Miller this offseason for multiple reasons. However, the top reason was Kamara’s incoming suspension. The star running back violated the NFL’s personal conduct policy for his role in an altercation in February 2022.
New Orleans has two capable running backs to fill in while Kamara serves his suspension. Both players had impressive years last year.
Williams had a breakout year in Detroit. The veteran running back had 262 rushing attempts for 1,066 yards and 17 touchdowns, all career highs. Furthermore, he broke the franchise record for rushing touchdowns in a season.
Meanwhile, Miller had an outstanding final season at TCU. The former Horned Frog had 224 rushing attempts for 1,399 yards and 17 touchdowns last year, all career highs. The rookie finished second in the Big 12 in rushing touchdowns last year, only behind Bijan Robinson.
Both running backs will have fantasy value with Kamara suspended.
Should I Draft Alvin Kamara?
The fantasy football world knew the veteran would get suspended for the altercation in February 2022. Today the NFL announced Kamara will miss the first three games this year for violating the personal conduct policy. While the suspension is less than ideal, is it enough to keep fantasy players from drafting the former Tennessee superstar? No.
However, Kamara’s production has slipped over the past few years. He has averaged only 3.9 yards per rushing attempt the past two years after averaging five yards per rushing attempt over his first four seasons.
Between the decline in production and the crowded backfield, fantasy players should only draft Kamara as their RB3 or lower.
