The Baltimore Ravens’ running back room has been a revolving door the past two seasons as J.K. Dobbins has battled numerous injuries. Dobbins tore his Achilles in Sunday’s Week 1 win over the Houston Texans, unfortunately ending his 2023 campaign.
Baltimore’s depth chart behind Dobbins includes Gus Edwards, Justice Hill, and Melvin Gordon. The trio of experienced backs will likely work in a committee with an unclear leader.
Is Gus Edwards worth a waiver claim? We dive in here.

Is J.K. Dobbins Out For The Season?
After suffering an Achilles injury on Sunday, tests confirmed that J.K. Dobbins tore his Achilles and will miss the remainder of the 2023 NFL season.
Dobbins was having a solid game when he suffered the injury, rushing eight times for 22 yards and a score and adding two receptions for 15 yards. In his place, Justice Hill and Gus Edwards each received eight carries.
Hll ran for nine yards but punched in two touchdowns. Edwards scampered for 32 yards on the ground. Neither running back saw a target in the passing game, as both traditionally have been downhill runners.
Should I Pick Up Gus Edwards In Fantasy Football?
Gus Edwards evenly split carries with Justice Hill upon Dobbins’ exit, but saw just 23% of total snaps compared to Hill’s 30% snap share. Additionally, Melvin Gordon is soon to be activated from the practice squad and should see his first NFL action since Week 11 last season when he was cut from the Denver Broncos.
Baltimore has a solid veteran trio to replace the injured Dobbins, but with veterans Leonard Fournette and Kareem Hunt still unsigned along with Jonathan Taylor on the trade block there are certainly capable running backs available. That being said, John Harbaugh stated that he likes the guys they have in the room.
If anybody is to emerge as a fantasy-relevant running back in this room, Gus Edwards is the top choice. That being said, he will not see any receiving game usage and will be very touchdown-dependent as a fantasy option going forward. In a committee with Hill and Gordon, he will be tough to trust on a weekly basis.
Gus Edwards should be rostered as a depth piece everywhere, but prioritize higher upside players on the waiver wire in Week 1.
