As fantasy football managers are finalizing their lineups for Week 13, one player they won't have to worry about starting is San Franciso 49ers running back, Elijah Mitchell.
Mitchell exited Sunday's Week 12 win over the New Orleans Saints with a knee injury and did not return. Playing in only his fourth game of the 2022 season, the 49ers running back has had a lengthy and recent injury history.
Is this the end of the road for Mitchell? Is his season over? Let's take a closer look.

Is Elijah Mitchell Healthy or Injured?
After getting hurt in the very first game of the season, Mitchell returned to the field in Week 10, looking healthy and like his old self. He rushed for 89 yards on 18 carries, all while superstar Christian McCaffrey was sharing the backfield touches. But in Week 12, Mitchell once again found himself out of the game and on the sidelines.
Surprising to many, in his Week 9 return, Mitchell immediately made an impact behind McCaffrey. Head Coach Kyle Shanahan is known for being a run-first offensive mind, but no one had any idea he would utilize both his running backs to such an overwhelming extent.
It was clear the 49ers' approach was to include Mitchell every week in the game plan. But that all came to a crashing halt on Sunday when he was landed on awkwardly by an opposing player. On Monday, testing on Mitchell's knee revealed a sprained MCL, eerily similar to the one he sustained in his right knee in Week 1.
Will Elijah Mitchell Play Again This Season?
Coach Shanahan said on Monday that Mitchell is expected to be sidelined for six to eight weeks, meaning in all likelihood, his season is over.
Initial reports indicated a far less serious outcome for the 49ers running back, leaving many to believe he would be back at some point in the not-too-distant future. McCaffrey also came out of Sunday's game banged up, and will likely find himself on the injury report this week with "knee irritation," but has a much more promising outlook than his counterpart.
Can I Drop Elijah Mitchell in Fantasy Football?
There is slight optimism that when the 49ers presumably make the playoffs, Mitchell may be able to return. But don't hold your breath.
In season-long leagues, Mitchell should be sent to the waiver wire without hesitation. In dynasty formats and keeper leagues, stash him on your injured reserve if you have the room and the patience.
