Diontae Johnson Injury News
Johnson (toe) popped up on the injury report after being limited during Tuesday’s practice. His status worsened ahead of Wednesday when he was unable to practice at all. He remained a non-participant on Thursday, sparking legitimate concern about his availability for Saturday’s clash with the Raiders. However, optimism grew on Friday when the Steelers held one more practice. Pittsburgh didn’t release an official injury report for this practice, but teammate Najee Harris told the media that Johnson did participate.
Is Diontae Johnson Injured or Playing in Week 16?
The Steelers’ final injury report officially lists Johnson as questionable for Week 16. This fails to provide a decisive answer on his status and instead presents the opportunity for him to be a true game-time decision.
Johnson’s opponent, the Raiders, have hovered around mediocrity when defending wide receivers this season. Through 14 games, Vegas allows an average of 33 fantasy points per game to opposing wideouts, which ranks 17th in the NFL.
Beyond a relatively pedestrian matchup, Johnson received in good news in the form of Kenny Pickett clearing concussion protocol. The rookie is a clear upgrade over Mitch Trubisky thanks to his solid mobility and decision-making, both of which are more advanced and polished than one might expect from a first-year quarterback.
Pickett elevates the offense and Johnson should benefit. Assuming he plays, slot him in as a high-end WR3 or FLEX option.
Of course, if Johnson can’t suit up, look for George Pickens to operate as Pittsburgh’s top wide receiver, followed by the likes of Gunner Olszewski, Miles Boykin, and Steven Sims. In such a scenario, tight end Pat Freiermuth and running backs Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren would also see more targets.
