Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery joins Jahmyr Gibbs in the NFL’s top backfield. He is the RB17 for the year, averaging 14.6 half-point PPR fantasy points per game.
The veteran running back has had an outstanding season, totaling 185 rushing attempts for 775 yards and 12 touchdowns. Montgomery also has 36 receptions for 341 receiving yards this year.
Unfortunately, the star running back missed last week’s matchup against the Chicago Bears with a knee injury. Will Montgomery return this week, or is he out for the season?

Is David Montgomery Out For The Season?
The former Iowa State star suffered an MCL sprain in the Week 15 loss to the Buffalo Bills after totaling five rushing attempts for four yards and four receptions for 31 receiving yards, finishing the game with 5.5 fantasy points. Many believed Montgomery would miss the rest of the year with the injury.
However, the veteran running back opted against surgery. Instead, Montgomery has been working on rehabbing his knee with hopes of returning this season. While he won’t play tonight against the San Francisco 49ers or next week against the Minnesota Vikings, the star running back should return at some point during the playoffs.
After #Lions RB David Montgomery spent the last few days consulting with medical experts, sources are now optimistic that the star avoided the season-ending surgery that was initially feared.

David Montgomery’s 2025 Fantasy Football Outlook
Montgomery’s 2024 fantasy season is over. Therefore, it’s time for fantasy players to forward at his 2025 fantasy outlook. The veteran running back will be back in Detroit after signing a contract extension with the Lions earlier this year.
The star running back might not offer the same fantasy football upside as Gibbs. However, Montgomery has been a scoring machine since joining the team. He has 25 rushing touchdowns over the past two seasons, totaling double-digits in both years. Yet, fantasy experts tend to overlook the veteran.

Many fantasy football experts will have Montgomery as a low-end RB2 in their 2025 rankings. However, fantasy players should feel confident drafting the veteran as a high-end RB2 with significant upside if Gibbs were to miss time with an injury.
