Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery was the 73rd overall pick by the Chicago Bears in the 2019 NFL Draft. Montgomery had an excellent college career, totaling 624 rushing attempts for 2,925 yards and 26 touchdowns in three years at Iowa State.
The former Cyclone had a solid rookie season, totaling 242 rushing attempts for 889 yards and six touchdowns. However, he was a fantasy superstar the following year. Montgomery had 247 rushing attempts for 1,070 yards and eight touchdowns in 2020, ending the season as a top-five fantasy running back.
While the former Iowa State star never had another top-five finish, he was a consistent RB2 for fantasy players. Montgomery had at least 800 rushing yards and five touchdowns in 2021 and 2022.

Is David Montgomery Injured?
Fantasy players had high hopes for the veteran running back in his first season with Detroit. Montgomery had 21 rushing attempts for 74 yards and a touchdown in Week 1, scoring 13.4 half-point PPR fantasy points.
Last week, the former Iowa State star had another solid fantasy performance. He had 16 rushing attempts for 67 yards and a touchdown against the Seattle Seahawks, scoring 11.9 fantasy points. Unfortunately, Montgomery suffered a thigh injury in the game.
While the veteran running back believes he will miss a few weeks, head coach Dan Campbell says Montgomery is day-to-day. However, fantasy players should expect the former Iowa State star to miss the Week 3 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons.
Should I Pickup Craig Reynolds?
Many hope this injury leads to the Lions using Jahmyr Gibbs in a featured role. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case last week. When Montgomery left the game with a thigh injury, Reynolds had the same number of rushing attempts (three) as Gibbs.
Furthermore, the injury seems like a 1-2 week thing, not a 3-4 week issue. Therefore, Reynolds could quickly find himself glued to the bench again. Instead of adding the veteran, fantasy players should target a running back with more upside.
Jerome Ford is taking over as the Cleveland Browns’ starting running back after the team lost Nick Chubb to a season-ending knee injury Monday night. Fantasy players should use up to 70% of their free agent acquisition budget (FAAB) on the former Cincinnati Bearcat.
