Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery had a mostly successful stint during his four seasons with the Chicago Bears and is now expected to be at least the short-yardage back for Detroit alongside 12th-overall pick Jahmyr Gibbs.
However, the Iowa State product has missed a handful of games in three of his four seasons in the league and is no stranger to minor injuries. The Lions just began organized team activities, and he's already making injury headlines. We have his latest update.
Is Montgomery healthy or injured and what is his 2023 fantasy football outlook? Let's get into it.

David Montgomery Injury Update For Fantasy Football
Montgomery left the field with an undisclosed injury during organized team activities on Thursday. He was able to walk off the field under his own power to the locker room. Unless it's a major deal, we likely won't get a ton of new updates on his status since the season is far away and teams don't have to disclose the status of players.
The situation is one to keep an eye on, but for now, there's not much of a takeaway.
David Montgomery 2023 Fantasy Football Outlook
With Jamaal Williams and D'Andre Swift gone from the Detroit offense, Montgomery and Gibbs will both be fantasy relevant in 2023. The 222-pound Montgomery will likely take on the Williams role from last season as the primary ball carrier and short-yardage back. Gibbs will likely handle the majority of the receiving work, but it's worth noting Montgomery has 155 career receptions, so he's no slouch in that part of the game.
Detroit should have one of the best offenses in the NFL again in 2023, so Montgomery has real touchdown upside. We can't expect 17 rushing scores like Williams had last season in this offense, but a double-digit scoring campaign is well within his range of outcomes.
In FFPC drafts, Montgomery's ADP sits at the RB22 spot, which is just behind Dameon Pierce, Dalvin Cook, and D'Andre Swift and just ahead of Cam Akers, Rachaad White, and James Conner. Montgomery arguably has the best balance between projected workload and quality of offense he's playing in, so that seems like a fair valuation. He can post RB2 numbers sharing a backfield with Gibbs. If Gibbs misses any games, Montgomery will have RB1 upside in those instances.
