Former Dallas Cowboys tight end Dalton Schultz signed with the Houston Texans in free agency. The veteran was a fourth-round pick by the Cowboys in the 2018 NFL Draft.
Fans might remember Schultz getting drafted as the team had just learned Jason Witten was retiring. However, the former Stanford star had almost no impact early in his NFL career. He was predominantly a blocking tight end over his first two seasons.
The young tight end had only 13 receptions on 17 targets for 122 receiving yards in his first 27 career games. However, things changed in 2020. The former Stanford star had 63 receptions on 89 targets for 615 receiving yards and four touchdowns in 2020 before having a career year in 2021. That year Schultz broke out, totaling 78 receptions on 104 targets for 808 receiving yards and eight touchdowns, all career highs.

What Did Dalton Schultz Accomplish In 2022?
Coming off a career year in 2021, the Cowboys placed the franchise tag on Schultz last offseason. Unfortunately, the veteran tight end struggled with injuries last year and saw his production decline. The former Stanford Cardinal had 57 receptions on 89 targets for 577 receiving yards and five touchdowns in 2022.
Dallas considered using the franchise tag on the veteran tight end for the second consecutive year. However, they placed the franchise tag on Tony Pollard instead, allowing Schultz to hit the open market.
Is Dalton Schultz A Good Fit With The Texans?
Despite coming off a disappointing season, many expected Schultz to sign a significant contract in free agency. However, the market went cold, and he lacked options. Ultimately, Schultz signed a one-year deal with the Texans worth up to $9 million. He will get to test the free agent market again next offseason.
Some fantasy players might not like the landing spot for the veteran tight end. However, it’s a solid landing spot for fantasy purposes. Houston will likely use the No. 2 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft on a quarterback.
Typically rookie quarterbacks tend to lean on the sure-handed tight ends. Luckily for the rookie, Schultz had only three drops last season. More importantly, Houston’s wide receiver lacks appeal.
The team traded away Brandin Cooks over the weekend, leaving them with Robert Woods, Nico Collins, John Metchie III, and Noah Brown. Woods is the only receiver with significant NFL experience. Therefore, fantasy players shouldn’t be surprised if Schultz leads the Texans in targets next season.
