The Buffalo Bills made a boss move in drafting former Utah tight end Dalton Kincaid. Sensing that the Dallas Cowboys are interested in taking him with the 26th overall selection, Buffalo negotiated a trade with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Buffalo gave up their 2023 first-round (27th overall) and fourth-round (130th overall) picks to move in front of the Cowboys. While the Bills didn’t give up much, is Kincaid worth trading up, even for just two spots?
He could use much coaching to become a better blocker and to have more variations in his route running. Despite these shortcomings, his upside is intriguing. Kincaid can create separation from defenders and has a vast catch radius, given his 6’ 4” height.
This 2022 First Team All-Pac-12 member also has enough speed to leave linebackers or defensive backs behind on seam routes. He also has sure hands, even when making contested catches. Quarterback Josh Allen could use another big target downfield, and Kincaid fits the role. Having him lined up helps create mismatches. The Bills do have talented receivers in Gabe Davis and Stefon Diggs. However, Kincaid can be the difference-maker, especially within their division.
Buffalo Will Try To Outsmart the Competition by Drafting Dalton Kincaid
The AFC East is full of elite defensive backs. The New York Jets have Sauce Gardner, D.J. Reed, and Jordan Whitehead. Meanwhile, the Miami Dolphins traded for Jalen Ramsey to pair him with two-time NFL receptions leader Xavien Howard. The New England Patriots added Christian Gonzalez to a room with Jonathan Jones, Kyle Dugger, and Jabrill Peppers.
These players have the talent to shut down or neutralize Buffalo’s receivers. Therefore, the Bills needed to add more talent to their receiving corps. They did add Deonte Harty, Trent Sherfield, and Justin Shorter. But Kincaid’s massive frame makes it difficult for defensive backs to take him down.
The Bills can add more pages to their offensive playbook with Kincaid lined up with Dawson Knox. They can disguise passing attempts by stacking the box, making it look like a rushing play. It would be a nightmare to cover these big receivers, making them viable targets during third-and-short situations.
Buffalo can use Kincaid to outsmart the ball hawks on the opposite side. But while he offers several benefits in the passing game, he must improve his blocking skills. Otherwise, seeing him lined up might give opposing defenses a clue about what the Bills will do after the snap.
The Kansas City Chiefs won their second Super Bowl title in four years, thanks to the Patrick Mahomes-Travis Kelce tandem. If all goes well, Allen may have gotten the pass-catching tight end who can put them over.
