It's evident that the Arizona Cardinals are already in the midst of a tanking year, and the season hasn't even started yet. They traded former 2020 first-round pick Isaiah Simmons to the New York Giants for a seventh-round pick and shipped off 2020 third-round pick Josh Jones for a fifth-round pick.
On top of that, they placed quarterback Kyler Murray -- who is still recovering from an ACL tear -- on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list to begin the season. Veteran Colt McCoy was also released just a couple of days ago. So, that leaves either rookie Clayton Tune or recently acquired Joshua Dobbs as the team's starting quarterback for Week 1.
Is Tune or Dobbs the Cardinals starting quarterback for Week 1? Will they provide any fantasy value? Let's take a look.
Is Clayton Tune Or Joshua Dobbs The Cardinals Starting Quarterback For Week 1?
The Cardinals will enter the 2023 season with a decision to make at quarterback. New head coach Jonathan Gannon, though, isn't ready to name a starter just yet because he thinks "it's a competitive advantage for us going to Washington."
Arizona only has two options at quarterback that could potentially start in Week 1 following Murray's placement on the PUP list. Tune, a 2023 fifth-round rookie, or Dobbs, who the team traded for just last week, are the only healthy signal-callers on the roster.
It remains to be seen who Gannon rolls with in Week 1 against the Commanders. But Dobbs probably remains the favorite for the QB1 role to start the year. With the Cardinals trading a fifth-round pick for the 28-year-old, all signs point to him starting, especially since Tune had a very up-and-down preseason.
Joshua Dobbs 2023 Fantasy Football Outlook
If Dobbs starts the season as the Cardinals QB1, you likely can't expect much fantasy production from the veteran. In two starts with the Tennessee Titans last season, he averaged 11.4 fantasy points per game. The former 2017 fourth-round pick had under 12 points in both games with just two total touchdowns.
Dobbs hasn't seen much playing time over his career and has just 85 career attempts since he entered the league in 2017. But the Cardinals obviously saw something to acquire him.
Dobbs shouldn't be drafted in most one-quarterback leagues (unless you're in a crazy 32-team format). In Superflex formats, he can be a fine backup option as your QB3 -- just in case one of your starters goes down early in the season.
