The Green Bay Packers have a long history of not picking a wide receiver in the first round of the NFL Draft. Despite trading away Davante Adams last offseason, the Packers didn’t use either of their first-round picks on a wide receiver.
Green Bay lost Allen Lazard in free agency this year. Yet, the team still didn’t use a first-round pick on his replacement.
Instead, the Packers have used six draft picks over the past two years on wide receivers. They spent a second and fourth-round pick on Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs last year. The Packers also used a second-round selection this year on Jayden Reed.

What Did The Packers Wide Receivers Accomplish Last Year?
After a slow start to his rookie year, Watson picked up his play in the second half. The former North Dakota State star had 41 receptions on 66 targets for 611 receiving yards and seven touchdowns in 14 games. He also had seven rushing attempts for 80 yards and two touchdowns last season. Furthermore, Watson had the most receiving touchdowns among rookies in 2022.
While he wasn’t a top-100 draft pick, Doubs had a productive rookie year. The former Nevada star had 43 receptions on 67 targets for 425 receiving yards and three touchdowns in 13 games. More importantly, Doubs was arguably Green Bay’s top wide receiver over the first several weeks last season.
Meanwhile, Reed had an outstanding year at Michigan State. He had 55 receptions for 636 receiving yards and five touchdowns in 2022. Furthermore, the former Spartan star finished second on the team in all three categories last year.
Who Will Be The Top Wide Receiver For The Packers In 2023?
Some have suggested Reed could be Green Bays’ No. 1 wide receiver as a rookie. However, the role belongs to Watson. The second-year star broke out last season in the Week 10 matchup against the Dallas Cowboys. Watson had four receptions for 107 receiving yards and three touchdowns in that contest.
However, the rookie receiver should push Doubs for the No. 2 role. While the former Nevada star had some positive moments last year, Doubs must fight to keep his starting role opposite Watson.
Fantasy players should target Watson in their drafts this year, as he is the clear-cut WR1 in Green Bay. Meanwhile, Doubs or Reed could be worth drafting in the later rounds, depending on the league settings.
